Performing arts had a leading role in the ambitious cultural project of the Second Spanish Republic (1931-39). Artists, composers, dancers, filmmakers and poets such as Federico García Lorca imagined ways to combine the avant-garde with the popular to enrich the cultural level of the whole population. The military rebellion of 1936 put an end to one of the most fertile creative periods in the history of Spain.
